Women's Health Services

We offer a comprehensive range of women's health services. If you are facing financial difficulties, please talk to our staff and we will help support you.

Listed below are a number of the services we offer or recommend

Breast care and Breast Cancer Screening

Please let us know immediately if you have noticed any change in your breasts or have a family history of breast cancer that we are not aware of.

Breast Screening is offered to well women who have no significant risk factors or signs/symptoms of breast cancer. Your risk of breast cancer will increase as you age.

While It is widely agreed that mammographic screening of women aged 50 to 74 years, will save lives through the early detection of cancer, for women outside these age groups recommendations for breast screening vary both nationally and internationally.

For these reasons we believe a more personalised approach to breast screening is useful and now invite all women in their 40th year to come in and see us. This appointment will enable us to address any concerns you have, better understand your personal risk of breast cancer and plan screening for you. A standard appointment is required, and normal fees apply.

Our national breast screening service, Breast Screen Aotearoa (BSA), provides an excellent free breast screening for women aged 45 to 69 years inclusive. Please visit their website to register.

If we do not see that you have had a mammogram, we will contact you three months after your 45th birthday to invite you to join our national breast screening program (BSA).

Cervical screening

Our doctors and nurses are trained in cervical sample taking. Please contact us to book an appointment.

Regular cervical screening is recommended for all women aged 25-69. For information about the National Cervical Screening Programme please see visit TimetoScreen or talk to one of our nurses or doctors.

If you have any concerns, for example pain, bleeding or discharge, please see us even if you are up to date with your smear.

Note some patients may be eligible for a fully subsidised cervical smear in our nurse-led clinics. Ask your GP or practice nurse if you qualify.

Emergency Contraception

Please see us as soon as you are able if you require emergency contraception. You can make a booking with our practice nurse if your doctor is not available. Up to four fully subsidised sexual health consults per year are available for patients up until their 25th birthday.

Information on Prenatal Screening

The prenatal screening programme for Down Syndrome and other conditions has been in place in New Zealand since 2007. The combination of clinical factors, blood test results (serum levels of Papp-A and bHCG) and an ultrasound scan result of the baby (nuchal translucency scanning), gives women in the first trimester of pregnancy, a high quality risk result. The following link provides information about antenatal screening in New Zealand.

If a woman has a high-risk result (1 in 300 or higher), she can choose to have a more invasive test available in NZ both public and private (amniocentesis or Chorionic Villus Sampling) to determine whether the fetus has Down Syndrome.

In addition to these tests a new test Non Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) for Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome) provides more comprehensive first trimester screening. There are two private providers that perform this test in New Zealand:
